Latest Neurowear updates

It’s now September and still no word on where or how to buy Neurowear’s Necomimi. I spoke to guys at Neurowear earlier this year, who said that they were expecting to make public their sales and pricing information around this time.

Since I first spoke to them there have been several Continue reading

A step closer to AI’s, Androids, Cyborgs, Bionics….

Today’s post follows a slightly different train of thought to normal but I thought it interesting nonetheless.

In recent months I have noticed an increasing amount of literature on the development of not “artificial life” (A I) as a whole, but rather the building blocks of life in artificial form.

This to me seems to take us, the general public, a fairly large leap towards getting our heads around the fact that AI’s, Androids, Cyborgs and Bionics etc, will be designed in the form of and work just like human biology and will be available in the not to distant future.

Many early developments have already made their marks upon the world and it seems that fully fledge conscious androids are only just around the corner, especially when you’ve got quotes like this which are simply mind blowing.

“I am 100 per cent positive that we can get evolution to work outside organic biology”

The world’s first mind-controlled smart TV?

In recent posts we have discussed how rapidly brain-computer interface and mind controlled technology has progressed and today we have another instance of a possible real world application.

Debuted at the IFA 2011 (a consumer electronics conference in Berlin), Haier a leading Chinese consumer technology company has introduced the world’s first brain-computer interface (BCI) and motion controlled smart TV.

The TV, due to be release this October with prices yet to be confirmed, is unlike any traditional TV. Haier’s Smart TV can interact with viewers via what some have called NeuroSky’s MindReader headset.

In fact it was NeuroSky’s Mindwave headset that was used as the control device and it works through measurement and analysis of an individuals mental state, (currently for NeuroSky this is assertiveness and calmness) by which the data produced can be used and programmed to perform basic functions.

We at Thinktech are currently testing both the Mindwave and Mindset headsets (reviews coming soon) and it is more than likely that both of these headsets will be compatible with Haier’s Smart TV.

Upon initial research it would appear that Haier’s smart TV is ordinary as far as smart TV’s go and Haier have only incorporated the existing mind-controlled games developed by NeuroSky. The TV it seems is not being controlled by the user’s mind but instead it is the games installed on the TV.

As I have stated before the Mindwave and Mindset headsets only allow you to perform basic functions within the parameters of assertiveness and calmness and so what you see in the video below, can be achieved on your own laptop if you buy a headset and install the games provided by NeuroSky.

NeuroSky equipment test and reviews coming soon.

(UPDATE 24/02/12:  Apologies to those of you who have been patiently waiting for the reviews of the NeuroSky products. We are now aiming to provide full reviews in the spring when we launch the new website, however a short review will be posted in the mean time.)

So last week I ordered the NeuroSky Mindset and Mindwave headsets, they should arrive any day now.  My plan for this blog is to eventually develop it into an e-commerce website, offering retail services for these and associated brain-computer interface, mind controlled and neurotechnology products.

I feel that at this time the only way to achieve this ethically & organically is to buy what products I can, test & evaluate the equipment and then produce some decent reviews. I shall make some high quality videos that can be viewed here and on my youtube channel.

I certainly want to know how good this equipment really is and whether there is enough of a market for me to import products. In the run up to christmas I hope to further develop my contacts with the various hardware and software developers, with the aim of gaining distribution rights in the UK and throughout Europe.

Be sure to check back regularly for news, product reviews and updates on the online shopping front. JJ

Incredible electronic tattoo to revolutionise human-machine & B-CI interfaces

“It’s a technology that blurs the distinction between electronics and biology.”

Human monitoring technologies are developing rapidly, day by day there are new advancements and today is one of those days. The picture to the left is an insight into the next  revolution in human-machine interfaces.

Researchers in the US have developed an “electronic tattoo” that could herald a revolution in the way patients are monitored and provide a breakthrough in computer gaming.

“They used the device, which is thinner than a human hair, to monitor the heart and brain, according to a study in the journal Science“. The device is so flexible it can move and stretch with human skin and is hoped to replace the bulky equipment used in hospitals.

In respect to Brain-Computer Interfaces, reservations that people currently have about the consumer grade EEG technology, is it’s ability to distinguish and process the actual thoughts that control movement. Most applications currently available need to be taught or associated to specific thoughts (any will do) do generate specific movements. See the Prius inspired bike of the future.

One area that sees advancement with this new technology is in speech regonition. When the skin patch was attached to the throat it was able to distinguish between up, down, left and right. Imagine the advancements in gaming, communications, transport……
